From Crisis to Resilience: Africa’s Progress in Healthcare

From Crisis to Resilience: Africa’s Progress in Healthcare
September 17, 2026

September 2026 is highlighting both the challenges and growing capabilities of Africa’s healthcare systems. From infectious disease response to emergency medical preparedness, developments across the continent demonstrate how investment, technology, trained healthcare workers and international cooperation are strengthening Africa’s ability to respond to health emergencies.

Ebola: Building on Lessons from Previous Outbreaks

The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently responding to an outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola for which there is currently no vaccine or treatment specifically licensed for the disease.

While the outbreak remains serious, the response is demonstrating how much African outbreak management has evolved. By early September, response capacity in affected areas had expanded significantly, with 59 care facilities providing 1,346 beds, compared with just one nine-bed treatment centre when the response began. More than 4,000 additional health professionals have also been deployed.

Patient recovery is also being recorded. As of 7 September, WHO reported at least 1,611 people had recovered from the current outbreak across the affected countries. Clinical research is simultaneously underway through the PARTNERS trial, which is evaluating potential treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease.

These developments demonstrate an important lesson: effective Ebola control depends not only on medicines and vaccines, but also on rapid diagnosis, treatment capacity, contact tracing, infection prevention, community engagement and strong health infrastructure.

Cholera: Prevention and Treatment Can Save Lives

Cholera remains a significant public-health challenge across Africa, particularly where communities face limited access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare.

Yet cholera is also an example of where effective medical intervention can make a measurable difference. WHO notes that the majority of patients can be successfully treated with prompt oral rehydration, while severe cases can receive intravenous fluids and appropriate medical care. With early and proper treatment, the case-fatality rate should remain below 1%.

Vaccination is another important tool. Oral cholera vaccines have been used extensively in African outbreak settings, while improvements in surveillance, water and sanitation infrastructure, community education and rapid response are helping countries strengthen their ability to contain outbreaks.

South Sudan provides a notable example. During its major cholera response, large-scale oral vaccination and coordinated public-health measures were credited by WHO with preventing a substantial number of potential cases.

A New Era of Health Emergency Preparedness

Africa’s progress extends beyond individual diseases.

In September, Ethiopia became the first country in Africa to have a civilian Emergency Medical Team internationally classified by WHO, strengthening the continent’s ability to deploy trained medical teams during emergencies. Portuguese-speaking African countries are also strengthening emergency medical-team readiness and cooperation.

At the same time, WHO and Africa CDC continue to coordinate continental preparedness efforts, bringing together surveillance, laboratory testing, clinical care, logistics, research and community engagement.

The Bigger Picture

Africa’s health story is therefore one of challenge, innovation and increasing resilience.

Outbreaks such as Ebola and cholera continue to place enormous pressure on communities and healthcare workers. However, the continent is developing stronger systems to detect diseases earlier, expand treatment capacity, deploy medical teams and use vaccination and public-health interventions more effectively.

For Maela Consortium, healthcare represents an important part of Africa’s broader development agenda. Strong health systems support productive communities, resilient economies and sustainable investment.

Africa’s healthcare future will depend not only on treating disease, but on building the infrastructure, expertise, technology and partnerships needed to prevent the next crisis before it becomes one.
